These barong masks are actually wall hangings. There are no eye
holes, no straps and the cut out in the back is not large enough for
your face. They measure 9" X 9" X 3" and come with the
story of the Barong $50.00
|
| There are
several Barongs: Barong Macan (tiger), Barong Celeng (pig), Barong Gajah
(elephant), Barong Bangkal (Wild Boar) and the most famous of all the
Barong Ket (a cross between a lion and a bear), all are the personification of
good. |
| The
Barong, a large shaggy beast, is considered the protector of the village.
The original Barong was a demon. In order to scare him away the people made
a costume of a larger version of him. Two village men wore that costume and
drove away the real Barong. Since that time the Barong is believed to have
powers to do good. |
| The
Barong is seen mostly in the famous (Trance dance). Where he along with
village men drive Rangda from the village back to her home in the
graveyard. |
