Back                                                          Big Government

Another thing I hear all the time is that government is too big. I'll go along with that to a point. I'm sure there are some areas that could be cut back on, but some departments that have been cut, were cut beyond where they should have been.
Let's take a look at some things that have happened recently:
Over 1,300 people have been sickened across the nation by Salmonella. At first the FDA blamed tomatoes, costing tomato farmers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Then they finally found that it was probably Chile Peppers from Mexico. People this is an agency whose budget was cut for the past 6 years. Less money - less inspections. I don't know about you but I want to feel safe when I eat.
Last year it was Spinach and before that Beef. All after the Bush administration started with their cuts.
8/09/08: Almost 6 million pounds of beef has been recalled because of potentially deadly E. coli bacteria contamination.

Toys have been pulled off of shelves, with lead paint. (From China). The Consumer Product Safety Commission has also been cut by 10% under Bush. I also feel strongly that the kids in my family should be kept safe.

How do you feel about Transportation? Education? Crime? The air you breath and water you drink? All of these have also been cut. The "Police on the street." program has been cut drastically & murder is on the rise. They are begging for Fire fighters in California while the budget for fire-fighters has been cut. Water and air quality rules have been weakened.
We (Under Reagan & Bush "the son.") have deregulated the banking industry and watched as the housing industry collapsed, due to bad loans.
We watched as gas prices soared while investors used the Enron loophole to buy futures on crude oil. Less government/higher prices for us.
Would you like to retire without Social Security or Medicare.  I could go on and on, but I think you see my point.
Meanwhile, Government has grown more under the Bush administration then at anytime in the recent past. It's not the size of government that is the problem but where it is over-sized and over-used.
   More coming!   Al
