Back                                                     Border security

August 23rd. 2006
I just watched the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, in a news Conference, making the case that the security of the homeland was in much better condition since George W. Bush ordered National Guard troops to the southern border. People it's been almost five years since 9/11, what has taken him so long and why National Guard? Could it possibly be because the Republican run House and Senate wouldn't even consider the recommendations that the Democrats put forward to increase the boarder patrol?
Another thing I'd like to point out is that Bill Clinton prosecuted more businesses for hiring illegal immigrants every year he was in office then George Bush has in his entire time in office and Bill Clinton didn't have 9/11 in the background. Most businesses and private citizens (as in people who hire maids, gardeners, nannies. etc.) pay illegal immigrants less then the minimum wage and many of them pay under the table, making the illegal aliens virtual slaves. If they complain all the employer has to do is mention immigration and deportation.
States along the border are responsible for the arrest and incarceration of illegal aliens caught crossing the borders. These states haven't been being reimbursed by the federal government. Nor has any state been reimbursed for the social services they have been forced to supply. Many towns and cities near the border have had to hire extra police and prosecutors putting an extra burden on their citizens. Hospitals and school systems across the country are also feeling the squeeze. More things the Republican administration refused to fund over Democratic members in the House and Senate pushed for. It appears as if a tax break for the top 1 percent of American households are was more important then our borders.
We have to start enforcing our immigration laws. Where has the oversight by the Republican held Congress been?
