Back Dela-whale: |
| The wayward whale |
| by Uncle Butch |
| Helis, the beluga, said to a friend one day. |
| “You know I’m getting to old to play |
| and the oceans so cold it makes me shiver |
| I think I’ll go up the Delaware River.” |
| “Why don’t you come too, I don’t mind sharing |
| and I hear there’s an awful lot of herring." |
| His friend said “No they just had a flood |
| and I’m sure the river is full of mud.” |
| So he came alone and he swam all day, |
| he had no idea how long he’d stay. |
| On the second day, he thought this is silly, |
|
I’ve swam two days and I’m only at Philly. |
| On the third day and before it got dark |
| he was way up river by Waterfront Park. |
| A little boy on the bank, had a fall, |
| he couldn’t believe what he just saw. |
| He ran to his father and said “I just saw a whale.” |
| his father said “Please, don’t tell me a tale. |
| Next you’ll tell me the whale was flying, |
| don’t you remember, what I said about lying?” |
|
The child said “No, I’m telling the truth, |
|
I swear on the memory of Babe Ruth.” |
|
The father took a walk down to the shore |
|
and Helis decided to Breach once more. |
| The father said to his son. “go ahead, give me a ribbing, |
| I really thought that you were fibbing.” |
| While the father and son were hoping the whale would stay, |
| the Trenton Thunder began to play. |
| A lot of the fans were drinking beer |
| and no one in the park knew the whale was near. |
| It was in the bottom of the ninth inning, |
| the score was zero to zero, no one was winning. |
| One of Thunder's batters hit a ball out of the park, |
| when a dog saw the whale and started to bark. |
| So the Trenton Thunder, played a perfect game. |
| but it was the whale who got all the fame. |
| A fan looked over the fence and started to quiver, |
| he yelled real loud “There’s a whale in the river.” |
|
Then all of the players and all of their fans, |
| ran to the river, they emptied the stands |
| Somebody said. “This whale is so tame.” |
| and everybody forgot, about the game. |
| Helis ate thirty herring, for a snack, |
| then lazily rolled over on his back. |
| The cheerleaders of the Trenton Thunder, |
|
couldn’t get over this natural wonder. |
| So they went to the river and when he got near, |
| they all broke out in a roaring cheer. |
| “Whale, whale, we like your style, |
| Whale, whale, please stay awhile. |
| If you stay for awhile, you can bet |
|
that you will become, Trenton’s pet. |
| Whale, whale, if you’ll wear our ascot, |
| we’ll make you Trenton Thunders mascot. |
| Goooo, whale.” |
| Helis, he was in his glory |
| and when he got home, he’d have quite a story. |
|
The people came and lined the shore, |
| and every day there were more and more. |
| A sign on a bridge read, (Trenton makes, the World takes.) |
| and some people on the shore were grilling steaks. |
| He loved the people, they were really nice, |
| but he was beginning to long for a little ice. |
| Finally Helis decided he’d had enough |
| of all the photographers and other stuff. |
|
So he said goodbye, to you and me |
| and turned around and swam back to sea. |
|
He had a lot of fun, he liked to roam, |
| but now it was time to go back home. |
| When he reached the ocean, he had a long way to go. |
| He wouldn’t stop swimming until he saw snow. |
| Along the way he ate lots of cod. |
| It took a long time but he found his pod. |
| The other whales said. “Helis, we know you like to roam, |
| But it sure is great to have you home. |
|
Helis replied. “It’s really good, to see you guys again, |
| though I had a good time and I made a friend.” |
| The whole pod had to laugh, when Helis started to sing. |
|
“Trenton was so great I might go back next spring." |
