Fantasy Vs. Reality                                                     Back

I enjoy science fiction & fantasy as much or more then most people. I've read & enjoyed J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings & the Hobbit, Frank Herbert's Dune, Most of the writings of Robert A. Heinlein & Isaac Asimov. I also like the works of earlier writers such as Jules Verne. I loved Homer's The Iliad & The Odyssey along with Greek Mythology. So I'm no stranger to Fantasy.
Now I'm seeing it again only this time, in a place where it shouldn't be, in Politics. It's nice to see things through rose colored glasses but it can lead you to places you shouldn't go, Iraq for example. The facts, the news reports, the reports by the C.I.A. & most of our generals on the ground in Iraq point to one scenario & that scenario is bleak, yet our president, because Iraqi prime minister Iyad Allawi says so, tells us that things are going good in Iraq. What would he expect him to say?
I'm sorry but I don't believe in the Jersey Devil, The lock Ness Monster, Sasquatch, The Yeti, or U.F.O.s. If you can't show me proof I'm going to be skeptical.
One of the first people George Bush believed was Ahmad Chalabi (We all remember how reliable he was.) All Iraqi leaders have much to gain by telling us what we want to hear. I prefer to believe my eyes & the word of our own people. George Bush & this administration prefer to believe people who say what they want to hear.
The majority of the people of Iraq view the interim government as a puppet government placed in power by the U. S. government & doing our bidding. They still see our troops as occupiers & even after the elections they are going to feel that way. Elections or no elections, they won't believe our motives were justified until there are no U. S. Troops on their soil. Didn't we learn anything from Lebanon (Beirut), or Somalia (Mogadishu). Israel went into Lebanon to drive the P.L.O. out & were greeted as hero's (The P.L.O. were an considered an occupying force) but when they stayed they became the same, and all hell broke out. Great Britain did the same thing in Afghanistan after World War II with the same results. Iraq today is no different. George Bush has to start to face the facts and stop living in a fantasy World.
The first fantasy we heard was that we would be greeted as liberators, we were for about a week. Then we heard that after we choose an interim government things would get better. When that didn't work they changed the story to say that the insurrection would loose followers after we turned over sovereignty. Now were waiting for the elections & they won't work either. We won't see an end to the violence till we are out of Iraq & we can't get out of Iraq till it has a stable government. So until we train sufficient army & police forces we are stuck (Dare I say, in a Quagmire.) You can thank George Bush's ego for this problem. How many more of his fantasies can we take?

9/21/04: George Bush went before the U.N. and ignoring his own C. I. A. commission's report on the situation in Iraq & the future prospects of the country, told the representatives that although the insurgents were trying to stop the elections we had everything under control & that they should help us with the elections. He played down the report by the C.I.A. that of the 3 possible scenarios the worst was a civil war & the best was a tenuous peace. He said that the C. I. A. was not looking at the situation with an optimistic view. He said if you don't think we are winning just ask Allawi.
It appears that George Bush sitting in Washington or on the campaign trail knows more then the C.I.A. (who are on the front line in Iraq). As for Allawi, he can only lose by not telling Bush what Bush wants to hear. I seem to remember another Iraqi, what was his name? Chalabi who George Bush also believed.
I sure glad that George Bush has those rose colored glasses.

How would I sound if I said that "God! created this seasons Hurricanes to punish Florida for the presidential election fiasco of 2000"? Like an idiot, Right? Well then how come so many people believe Jerry Falwell when he says that "God caused 9/11 because of our acceptance of Gays."? Or the Republican party when it runs presidential ads in Tennessee, & Arkansas saying that if John Kerry wins the election, Bibles will be taken out of circulation?
