How the Republic Party is using Religion for it's personal gains. Back
The Republican Party has Hijacked Religion. Not too many years ago the religious belt was an almost impossible area for the Republicans to gain votes in. Most religious people believe in the majority of the Democratic party's ideals.
People of Religion believe in health care for their children, they don't like to see poverty, they want their children well educated, their older family members taken care of. They also want to live in a clean & healthy environment. They don't like unnecessary wars. I'm sure, like me, they anguish when they see the children of Iraq in body bags or in hospitals.
When they sit on a jury where a doctor is being sued for neglect, because he was not paying attention & amputated the wrong breast of a woman or allowed a patient to receive the wrong blood type because he was cutting up with the nurse while she was hanging the blood & connecting the catheter, would want that doctor to be held responsible.
Let's face facts. Jesus didn't live a life of greed, he led a simple life. He preached forgiveness, even from the cross. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and educated the masses on the glory of Heaven. He didn't preach hate or fear. He didn't try to cause an uprising of the people against Rome. When he was dying on the cross, he didn't ask his father to punish the ones who crucified him, he ask him to forgive them. He told his followers "Judge not, lest you be judged."
Republicans seeing the Religious movement in the country & knowing it's power, found a way to regain their power. They set out to make the Republican Party seem like the party of the Religious Right. They picked a few of the most dividing issues that the Religious Right thought were important: Abortion, School Prayer, Separation of Church & State, and more recently Same Sex marriage & Embryonic Stem Cell Research & made them their issues.
If you've ever seen a magician operate you'll know that while he has you watching one hand, he's doing the trick with the other. The Republicans are doing the same. While the Religious Right are watching to see if the Republicans are going to be able to have Roe vs. Wade overturned, the Republicans are overturning years of environmental Protection legislation. While The Religious Right are watching to see Payer brought back into schools, the Republican party is giving huge amounts of money to drug companies under the guise of helping senior citizens with their drug costs. While the Religious Right are watching to see if the Ten Commandments can be placed on the lawn of a courthouse in Georgia, the Republican Party is changing the tax code to favor the wealthy at the expanse of everyone else. While the Religious right is waiting for a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage, the Republican Party is giving tax breaks to companies that outsource American jobs to cheap overseas labor. While the Religious Right is making sure that they are stopping the science of stem cell research, the Republican Party is using lies to lead us to war or covering up their ineptitude to run that war. While the Christian Coalition is watching to see if sex education can be taken out of schools (unless it's abstinence only) The Republican Party is busy dismantling years of hard earned social programs. All of these things benefiting the rich or powerful at the expense of the middle & lower classes.
You have to produce, so every once in awhile they throw their supporters a bone, like a ban on partial birth abortion. (Which by the way was overturned by the courts because it didn't have an exception for the health of the mother.)
Some leaders of the Republican party have become so arrogant in their believe that they have been able to con people of religion that they will now lie by misrepresentation or outright & believe they can get away with it. (So far it has worked.)
They had the Religious Right believing that George Bush had more moral values then John Kerry, even though his policies have put more people in poverty then anyone in recent history: He misrepresented the facts in order to lead America to war in Iraq; he gave the powerful drug companies a windfall at the expanse of older Americans; his environmental policies have weakened long standing regulations that have protected the health of American & world citizens for decades in order to create wealth for his powerful contributors.
Honesty is not an important value to the Republicans & neither is decency. Ask yourself who ran the dirtiest campaign. John Kerry tried to point out the faults of the administration, using facts. If people had only watched the news instead of the sound bite ads they would have seen who was telling the truth. A good example of this tactic is the administration's pounding on Kerry's statement "I did vote for the appropriations bill before I voted against it." Making Kerry seem like a flip flopper even though he was trying to help the American public by voting the way he did. They then pounded over and over again on the flip flopper theme.
The Republican campaign counted on the fact that people wouldn't take the time to find out the facts. Take a second and go Here to find out who the real flip flopper was.
Aren't the ten commandments important anymore? Doesn't "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." mean anything anymore?. How can people who believe in religion turn their backs and ignore certain sins. A sin is a sin.
Republicans aren't stupid, they have watched, as I have, while leaders of the Religious Right like Jimmy Swaggart, Jim & Tammy Faye Bakker and others fell from grace, only to be lifted back to their thrones after publicly asking God for forgiveness. If what they really wanted was God's forgiveness why not ask him in private. I would walk out to a quite place in the woods or climb a hill and humble ask him to forgive me. My Catholic friends go to confession where they would ask Jesus, through the intervention of a priest, to forgive them. Neither I nor my friends would ask him in public, it would be between ourselves and the Lord. When asking publicly for his forgiveness aren't you really asking for the public's forgiveness? The problem I have is, that after they get that forgiveness they go right back to their old habits. Praise the Lord, send me your money.
What ever happened to the true believers? People like Mother Teresa, Dr. Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi. People who loved God but did so humbly. I'm tired of watching people, who ask for donations so they can help feed children of poverty, while, they themselves, drive the most expensive cars, Live in fabulous homes, wear the best cloths & eat in the finest restaurants. Who have no income except what they get from their followers. True people of God don't ask for worldly goods, they live, unselfishly, for the good of mankind & the Glory of God.
I'd like to take all of you to Bali. There you would see what real virtue is. Bali, is not called the Isle of the Gods for nothing. The people of Bali, though they don't worship in the same way we do, live their lives for their God, every minute of every day is dedicated to him, every thing they do is done with him in mind. They take care of each other, care for each other, They know that we are all part of God's family.
Remember what I said about broken promises: 12/27/04: (CNN) WASHINGTON (AP) -- Opponents of gay marriage concede victory will not be swift in their attempt to amend the U.S. Constitution, even after prevailing in all 11 states where the issue was on the ballot last month. White House political adviser Karl Rove said after the election that President Bush intends to continue seeking a constitutional amendment that says marriage must consist of a man and a woman. At the same time, GOP congressional aides who attended a series of closed-door meetings recently said Rove did not mention the amendment when he outlined the administration's key legislative goals for the year ahead. Nor did the issue figure prominently in strategy sessions held by GOP congressional leaders, added these officials, who declined to be identified by name because the proceedings were closed to the press. I personally could care less what two people do in the confines of their own homes or with their own lives & I can't, for the life of me, see how the marriage of two people love each other, no matter their sex, could hurt marriage as I know it. However for you who voted for George Bush & Republicans, because of their moral values, isn't he letting you down. Magic! It got him elected & while you are waiting to see same sex marriage banned, As George Bush promised during the campaign, he will be giving his rich friends permanent tax cuts, and giving oil companies our protected wildlife preserves. If you can't see through his ruse, you had better get better glasses.
More to come.
