Is Israel better off?                                                             Back

I don't really feel that Israel is safer without Saddam Hussein.
True he fired Scud missiles at Israel during the Golf War & it's true he gave rewards to the families of the martyrs (Ha! butchers) who died killing innocent Wives & Mothers, Fathers & Children. The sons & daughters of Israel.
It may or may not be a great thing that he's gone. It's all going to depend on what happens in Iraq in the future & that is still an unknown. If the Ayatollahs have their way there is a good chance it will become a Theocratic Republic like the one in Iran and like Iran they will still hate Israel but unlike Saddam Hussein's Iraq the new one may very well sponsor terrorists.
Remember that 9 of the 9/11 bombers came through Iran without having their passports stamped.
Remember also that 14 of them were Saudi Arabian citizens.
The biggest problem in Israel is Yasser Arafat. A terrorist (Remember the Achille Lauro) turned statesmen. This corrupt, power hungry, man will not bend even a little to sign a peace treaty. Until he is out of the picture there will always be a Israeli Palestinian problem. It seems that the Palestinians are even more gullible then some of our voters. They really believe it's them he cares about.
At least Bill Clinton tried. Throughout his presidency he met with both Yasser Arafat & Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. He came close to a solution with the the Interim Agreement on Palestinian self-rule and even closer with the Wye River Accords. He never stopped trying until George Bush took over the White House, Since that time the gains made by Bill Clinton have gone to Hell.
For Jewish voters who think that George Bush is a friend of Israel. Remember that George Bush may talk the talk but has he tried even once to broker peace in the area? Since he has been in office & fully backed the Israeli government while shunning the Palestinians, more Israelis died in four years, then had in the eight years of the Clinton administration. From the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1992 through Camp David Summit in 2000 256 Israelis died. Compare that with 1.026 between Sept. 29th 2000 through Sept 2004. Diplomacy saves lives.
10/30/04: George Bush has yet to do anything constructive for Israel. I keep hearing that he is the best friend that Israel has ever had but I haven't heard what he's done. Oh! sure he backs Prime Minister Ariel Sharon but has he even once tried to broker a peace. It's easy to pick a side and then just sit back and do nothing, it's much harder to pick a side then meet with both sides and, as Jimmy Carter & Bill Clinton did, try to work out agreements. See above paragraph to see what happens when you only give lip service to a cause.
11/8/04: It looks as if we'll have a chance to see how good a diplomat George Bush turns out to be. Yasser Arafat appears to be on his death bed. If he dies & the Palestinian Authority can hold elections (They can't right now.) we may have a chance to broker a peace. It will take strong leadership from the U.S. along with cooperation from Israel. First Israel will have to allow free movement of the Palestinians so they can get to the voting sites, that may take U.S. pressure. If that happens, we will have to be willing to sit down with whoever they elect to represent them. This will not be easy, remember anyone who seems even slightly close to either the U.S. or Israel won't stand a ice cube's chance in Hell of getting elected, so the person we'll be talking with won't be our friend. It will be a heard sell and Israel will have to be willing to make strong concessions, that's where George Bush will have to change his positions, so far he has just endorsed everything Israel wanted, now he'll have to have some ideas of his own. We're about find just how important intelligence is, and how much George Bush has. I can only pray he has more then I give him credit for, World peace may depend on it.
