Kuta Beach                              Back
Kuta is the most insane place I've ever been and I've been a lot of places. It's like spring break in Fort Lauderdale, during the early 60's combined with Woodstock, with different music plus a little bit of  Key West. The difference is that it's an international city. I met people from all over the world, even a girl from Paraguay. though most of the tourist I met were from Australia.
On my third trip to Bali I stayed in Kuta for my first week before going up to Ubud, I usually did it the other way around. Anyway on my second night they had a huge beach party and since we didn't go till after midnight all the  liquor stores were closed, luckily one of our mates, a crazy Brit named Derek had half a bottle of vodka. Take a half empty bottle of vodka fill it with orange soda and you have a bottle of screwdrivers, well almost. They didn't have a live band but (technology) a huge screen with a virtual band. The beach was packed and the music was loud, and we ended staying till sunrise.
It wasn't hard, in the huge crowd, and within about ten minutes I lost the mates I went with, all eight of them, and didn't see any of them for a couple of  hours. during which time I went for a swim in the ocean, to cool off, (One thing about Bali is that it's hot.) met a group of kids from Java, one wanted a cigarette and had a bottle of Arak "Palm wine" (You smoke my cigarette and I Drink your Arak.) So even without Derek I had booze.
The gang I hung out with consisted of, as I said the crazy Brit Derek who had been in Bali for about a month and was heading back to Australia to find work and replenish his bankroll. So he could come back to Bali with cash in his pocket. Chris another Brit, Chris was a soccer player for a professional team in Britain and was planning a climb on Everest within a year. Tomasin, A really cute girl from, you guessed it, England. She was only with us for a couple of days, as she had to fly home to go to a friends wedding, after which she was flying to Australia where she had been living and back to work. Three girls from France, a couple with a little girl from New Zealand. Another Brit, an importer named Phil. It was a crazy but fun crowd.     Click  here to meet them.
