Back Misleading ads and sound bites in the 2006 congressional races.
Rick Santorum (Pa. Senate Race.) has been running a deceiving ad. He has been claiming that the right is mad at him for trying to pass a raise in the minimum wage. Ok let's take a look at his motives. For the past eight or so years he has voted against most of the efforts to raise the minimum wage. So why, this time, did he vote for it?
One, it's an election year and he can use the votes he can gain by moving toward the middle in a heavily Democratic state and two and the most important reason is that the Republicans attached an amendment to the bill that would repeal the Estate Tax. (Yes Estate Tax not Death Tax as the Republicans want to call it. You can't tax a dead man, only God can do that.)
The Republicans and Santorum have been trying to repeal the Estate Tax for years and by attaching it to the minimum wage increase tried to put pressure on the Democrats (During an election year.) to vote for it.
Now let's take a good look at the Estate Tax. Repealing it would only affect the top 1% of Americans. Those with an Estate of a million or more. It would cost the government billions in revenue. Billions that would eventually have to come from somewhere. If you guessed the middle class you are probably right.
I keep hearing the Republicans claiming that the tax hurts small business. I know many people who run small business and believe me when I tell you that everyone I know would love to have a million dollars behind their businesses. I personally don't consider a business with a million dollars behind them small.
So in reality Santorum hasn't changed his mind for the good of the people at the bottom of the food chain (Who will get the minimum wage increase as soon as the Democrats take control of congress.) but for his wealthy friends and supporters.
He says his votes are independent of party politics yet he voted 95% at the minimum and 100% on one year with the Republican hard liners, over the past 5 years. Not partisan?
Rudy Giuliani in an ad for Rick Santorum told people at a firehouse that Santorum was a friend of the first responders noting that he made sure they got everything they needed to protect our safety. Santorum approved the ad.
| Let's look at his voting
record. He voted to cut funds from the local police departments in the
cops on the streets program. Even though his party has been in power for
eight years, with a Republican President for the past six. The first
responders still don't have a radio frequency they can use to communicate
with. People the 9/11 commission said that, that was one of the reasons so
many fireman died inside of the towers. He voted for the fence on our
southern border but didn't fund it. He and the Republicans have cut
funding for new prison construction, even
while telling states to arrest illegal aliens. He hasn't pushed the
Republican appointed Justice Department to crack down or companies that
hire illegal immigrants.
How many lies is he willing to tell to hold on to his seat???? |
