 |
| Rangda; the
graveyard witch of Bali. This mask |
| once blessed is the essence of evil and is always kept in |
| a special pavilion within a temple. It is believed to be |
| responsible for much evil: Earthquakes, floods, famine, |
| plagues, disease, etc. and is kept covered with a white |
| cloth to contain it's magic. This cloth is only removed |
| by the Rangda Actor when he enters the stage, where a |
| priest is always on hand. Some of the older masks, over |
| a century old, are considered very powerful and are |
| followed by large crowds whenever they leave their |
| temple. Seen mostly in the Trance
dance where she fights |
| the Barong & is driven, with the help of men who
are in a |
| state of trance, out of the village. (The men are then |
|
brought out of trance by a priest sprinkling holy water |
| over them.) This mask is/or should be safe as it
has never |
| been blessed.
