| The Supreme Court: Back | |
| The court is made up of a Chief Justice and eight associate Justices all of whom are appointed by the President to serve a life term. Very few retire at a reasonably young age. (Once a justice, always a justice.) | |
| Justice: | Appointed by: |
| William H Rehnquist | Ronald Reagan (Republican) |
| John Paul Stevens | Gerald Ford (Republican) |
| Sandra Day O'Connor | Ronald Reagan (Republican) |
| Antonin Scalia | Ronald Reagan (Republican) |
| Anthony M. Kennedy | Ronald Reagan (Republican) |
| David H Souter | George Bush Sr. (Republican) |
| Clarence Thomas | George Bush Sr. (Republican) |
| Ruth Bader Ginsburg | Bill Clinton (Democrat) |
| Stephen G. Breyer | Bill Clinton (Democrat) |
| The next President will probably a be appointing two justices. As you can see above the Court is overloaded with conservative justices. If George W. Bush gets to appoint these justices will Roe v Wade hold up or will be overturned? The anti choice movement has already been testing the waters & I'm sure they will keep on trying. | |
