Back                                The war in Afghanistan Since the election

I've neglected this section long enough. I mentioned, (Before George Bush was re-elected.) that we had pulled troops out of Afghanistan prematurely leaving far to many troops to control the country. Let's take a look and see if I was right:
   1. The Taliban is resurging in the south.
   2. Afghans are being killed by terrorists throughout the country as are coalition troops.
   3. 90% of the worlds opium and heroin are coming out of Afghanistan.
   4. The reconstruction is far behind what it could be.
   5. The country is still split into sections that are mainly controlled by war lords and not the central Government.
   6. al Qaeda is still training in Afghanistan. (Well they don't have training camps anymore, but are now training by using the coalition troops and Afghan cities.)

From CNN News July 11 2006: Rumsfeld wants Europe drugs plan.

KABUL, Afghanistan -- U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has urged Europe to provide a "master overall plan" to fight Afghanistan's huge drugs trade, which has seen heroin flood Europe and Russia
Speaking at a joint news conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday, Rumsfeld said the drug's spread was a "danger" for Europe where opium smuggled from Afghanistan is in wide use.
"It seems to me that it is important for them (Europe) to recognize that it is a lot cheaper ... for them to assist the Afghan government in providing a master over-all plan for dealing with the counter-narcotic effort," Rumsfeld said.
He went on to say that the the Taliban was benefiting from the drug trade. What about al Qaeda? Is it going to be money from the Afghanistan Drug trade that supports the next terror attack on America?

Sept. 15th.
The Opium trade is booming, with most of the profits going to the Taliban and terrorists with the rest going to the war lords.
   NATO forces begging for reinforcements.
NATO and American casualties on the rise.
The Taliban resurging in the south
Al-Qaeda still hiding in the north.
Remember what I said about leaving to few troops in Afghanistan.
