                                                                     Catch a sand crab:
Most of us who live near the shore know about sand crabs but for visitors from other areas who don't I thought I let you know about them.
I spent most of my childhood summers at my Uncle's summer home in Seaside Park. My cousin Gay & I spent a lot of time on the beach, riding the waves & digging in the sand. One of the things we loved doing was catching sand crabs.
So if you have little kids with you they can enjoy the same experience. The little crabs are about 1" long and have no claws so they won't hurt your kids. They do tickle as they run around in your hand but most kids love that.
To catch them wait till a wave rushes out to sea then find an air bubble in the wet sand and dig really fast. If your lucky you'll have a sand crab in the sand you dug out.   Let your children catch the crabs they'll remember the experience for a long time.  Al

Pick Beach Plums:

Beach Plums grow among the plants that inhabit the sand dunes in the North Eastern U. S. . They become ripe in late August. Island Beach State Park is the only place I know of where you can pick the wild fruit but there may be other locations. The fruit is tiny (The size of a large grape) and though it is too bitter to eat makes a great Jam or Jelly. It may be a fun day for you and the kids but watch the thorns while picking.
