X Rays & Film                                                                     Back

Film works by changing the chemical composition of a layer of emulsion on the film by striking it with light waves. All colors of the spectrum have a different wave lengths so the emulsion is effected in different ways giving color to the finished photo or shades of gray to Black & White photos. X-rays are just one of the wave lengths, however they can penetrate the film casing exposing the film. This is usually a very small exposure & won't adversely affect the finished Photo. However since Sept. 11th 2002 the X-ray machines at airports have been intensified for more stringent security and will surly have a stronger effect, plus since exposure is cumulative The more times film passes through X-rays the more exposed it becomes, because of these facts here are some tips on carry unprocessed film when traveling.

1. don't pack your film in checked baggage as it is scanned with a more intense X-ray then hand carried luggage.
This includes cameras with film still in them
2. When possible ask for hand inspection. This inspection can be made easier by carrying your film in clear plastic
    or  mesh bags.
2.a You Can Check Rule 108.17 half way down This document for rules on hand inspections.
3. Since film is sold almost everywhere in the world think about buying it at your destination. This also goes for
processing your exposed film. Most photo shops around  the world have 8 hour processing & many offer 1 hour. Just
make sure to check with other tourist or locals to make sure of the reliability of the shop you choose. This method also
gives you the opportunity to share your photos with new friends or locals. Film once processed is not subject to the
effects of X-rays so you can give away prints & have new ones made once you reach home.
4. The higher the ISO (ASA) the worse the effect of X-rays will be.
5. Kodak has a website on X-rays & film. check here
6. Always remember that the inspectors are there to help secure the safety of the traveling public and treat them with
    courtesy.
7. Check What TSA Transportation Security Administration has to say about film & X rays.
